Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) with Built-In AF Motor for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Overview
The most compact and lightest in the history of fast zoom lenses. Its compactness makes it look and feel like an ordinary standard zoom lens, yet the versatility that a fast constant maximum aperture offers will definitely reshape your photographic horizons.…Read More product detail

Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 SP XR ZL Di LD Aspherical (IF) with Built-In AF Motor for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Best Review
I’m fairly new to the DSLR realm – I have been shooting with my Nikon D90 for just over a year now. I have used the kit (18-105, f3.5 -f5.6) lens for a while, but soon realized the importance of a wide aperture. So i got myself a Nikon 35mm f1.8 which worked great for indoor and outdoor family pictures. I also own a 12-24 f4 Tokina. However, I needed a “general” lens for covering more focal length, but did not want to compromise on the aperture. Ofcourse I also did not want to spend too much and my new Tamron is perfect for a lot more flexibility in focal length and for a great bargain. The lens comes with the front and rear lens cap and a petal hood. It’s lighter to work with (compared to my Tokina and 18-105 Nikon), and the build quality shows where the compromise is. But that does not bother me as the lens performs beautifully.
One thing that I’m not too comfortable with is the zoom ring (focal length ring) – it is not as smooth and comfortable as I’d like it to be. The autofocus can be a noticably noisy, but that’s not a big concern for me. And ofcourse, the lens is not an IF construction, so it extends out equal to the length of the lens effectively doubling it. The other thing that I still need to confirm – I did see some evidence of focussing errors when in AF. It did not grossly miss, but it was little off compared to what I was focussing on when I was composing the shot. I can compensate for that in my camera. But i think that may be a quality control issue for some lenses not all.
Having said that, the picture quality is very sharp. Obviously it works really well for low light. I used it for shooting my friends live performance in a dimly lit bar. The focal length range worked beautifully for portraits and wider angles and the fixed aperture was exquisite for shallow dof and low light. I did not need to use a tripod at all, just a higher ISO and I was set. The lens also has a “pseudo” macro capability, but does not produce a 1:1 and I would not bother – if you dig macro get a true macro lens.
I was a little skeptical as this was my first Tamron but I am not disappointed at all. I would recommend this if you’re a beginner-novice. It’s very affordable and gives very high quality pictures that you can’t expect from most other lenses in its price range. I would recommend going to your local store and trying one on before you make a decision. That’s what I did !
